Case Study: Implementation of Exit 13 Guard Rail

Exit 13 Riyadh Overview

Project Overview: Riyadh's Critical Interchange

The Exit 13 directional ramp in Riyadh is a vital part of the city's infrastructure. DASCO, in collaboration with MUTLAG ALGUAWIRY.Co, undertook a pilot project to replace and upgrade the guard rail system on the upper corridor (bridge) of this interchange.

The bridge is a concrete structure designed to carry two lanes of traffic with shoulders, making the integrity of its restraint system paramount for public safety.

Location: Directional Ramp, Exit 13 - Riyadh.

Observations of the Existing Guard Rail

At the Entrance and End part of the Bridge:

  • Replacement posts: Made of steel approximately 2 millimeters thick, which is insufficient for robust impact absorption.
  • Missing Posts and Rails: Gaps in the existing system, posing significant safety hazards.
  • Base Plates: Replacement post base plates were approximately 8 mm thick.
  • Anchor Bolts: Used were not conforming to standard construction practice, indicating potential structural weakness.

Example of insufficient base plate and anchor bolt.

In the Middle part of the Bridge:

  • Less Severe Collisions: Compared to the entrance and end parts, collisions here were less severe.
  • Brittle Base Plates: Base plates for the posts were made of very brittle material, leading to breakage from minor collisions.

DASCO's Proposed Solution: DS Bridge Guard Rail TL4

Proposed DS Bridge Rail TL4

Based on a comprehensive survey and bridge inspection, DASCO proposed and implemented the **DS Bridge Guard Rail TL4** system. This choice was based on information from the Ministry of Transport (MOT) Branch and aligns with Korean standards for economical yet highly effective products.

The TL4 (Test Level 4) classification indicates a high level of crash-worthiness, suitable for critical bridge applications, offering superior safety compared to the existing system.

Why DASCO's Solution?

  • Significant National & International Experience: Proven track record in road restraint systems.
  • High Quality Products: All DASCO plants have ISO Certification.
  • Lighter Weight & Easy Maintenance: Compared to other solutions.
  • Local & International Certifications: Products meet standards in South Korea and the US.

Installation Process of the Proposed Product for Bridge

The installation process involved meticulous planning and execution, from preparing the site to fixing the new guard rail system.

1. Core Drilling

A coring machine was utilized to create precise holes for the new posts. This method helps eliminate the chance of micro-cracking in the concrete, ensuring the long-term integrity of the bridge structure.

2. Chemical Anchor Fixing & Leveling

Chemical anchors were used for secure fixing of the posts into the drilled holes, followed by precise leveling to ensure optimal alignment and stability of the guard rail system.

3. Post Installation

The new, robust guard rail posts were then installed, forming the foundation of the new safety system.

4. Simultaneous Dismantling & Installation

Efficiency was maximized by dismantling the old guard rail and installing the new DS Bridge Rail TL4 simultaneously, minimizing disruption.

Successful Outcome & Enhanced Safety

The initiative led by DASCO to install the proposed sample was presented to the Ministry of Transport and the Director General of the General Administration of Safety. The directive was successfully implemented in coordination with the Director of Road Safety, Ministry of Transport branch in Riyadh.

The new guard rail system, manufactured and imported from South Korea, was installed along the entire right side of the upper corridor (bridge) with a total length of 514 meters

This project not only replaced an inadequate system with a high-performance MASH TL4 guard rail but also enhanced road safety for the Exit 13 interchange, demonstrating DASCO's commitment to delivering safer and more durable infrastructure solutions.
